At the southernmost port of Fa'ao in Iraq, China's code suction dredger "Tongxu" is busy dredging the outer channel. This project is not only a key infrastructure project for China Iraq cooperation, but also an important manifestation of Chinese enterprises' strength and responsibility in the Middle East region, injecting strong impetus into promoting Iraq's economic development and regional connectivity.
Fa'ao Port is the starting point of Iraq's "Development Road" project, with a total investment of 17 billion dollars. It is planned to connect the main commodity ports on the southern coast of Iraq with the border of Türkiye through railways and roads. Since its launch in 2023, this project has become a core component of Iraq's strategy to build a new trade hub connecting Europe and the Middle East.
Tianjin Navigation Bureau Co., Ltd. (TDC), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Group, has undertaken the dredging project of the wharf wall, harbor basin, and waterway of Fa'ao Port, with a total dredging volume of 106 million cubic meters. At the work site, all positions on the "Tongxu" ship work closely together to ensure smooth navigation, with operators efficiently and accurately excavating silt. The chief engineer checks the operating parameters of the centrifugal pump to ensure smooth suction of seabed silt.
The project team has also overcome the difficulty of precision control, optimized key dredging equipment parameters, and ensured smooth project progress. It is expected to be completed on time in October this year. During the homework period, the Chinese team has always been committed to protecting the marine environment and strictly adhering to environmental standards. Dolphins can often be seen near the dredger, demonstrating the project's emphasis and effectiveness on ecological protection.
In addition, China's cutter suction dredger "KB" completed the dredging project of the submerged tube tunnel in Zubair Port, Iraq at the end of February this year. This is Iraq's first underwater tunnel, aimed at connecting Umm Qasr Port and Fa'ao Port, and integrating it into the transportation network of the "development path".
Project manager Mohammad Assad praised, "The technical capabilities and professionalism demonstrated by Chinese companies are admirable. The smooth construction of the Fa'ao Port will promote Iraq's economic transformation and diversified development." Chinese companies not only enhance their influence in the Middle East infrastructure market, but also lay a solid foundation for more cooperation in the future, helping Iraq take solid steps in economic development and regional cooperation.
