In Peru, known as the "heart of South American civilization", an energy project that bears the new fruits of China-Peru cooperation has been officially implemented. Recently, the San Gabán III Hydropower Station in Peru, constructed by Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), has successfully started power generation. This not only injects strong impetus into the development of renewable energy in Peru but also becomes another milestone in the deepening cooperation between China and Peru.
As one of the second batch of early harvest projects of China-Peru cooperation, the San Gabán III Hydropower Station in Peru is the first hydropower project invested and developed by Chinese enterprises in Peru. Located on the San Gabán River in Puno Province, southeastern Peru, the hydropower station has a total installed capacity of 209.3 megawatts and a designed annual power generation of 1.252 billion kilowatt-hours. It adopts an innovative model of a low dam with long water diversion and centralized water head power generation. The water diversion and power generation system is ingeniously arranged inside the mountain on the right bank, with a rated water head of 630.71 meters. The two impulse hydraulic turbines were carefully constructed by the 6th Engineering Bureau and the 14th Engineering Bureau of PowerChina, demonstrating the excellent technical strength of China's hydropower construction.
During the construction of the project, the project team of PowerChina not only focused on the engineering quality but also actively fulfilled its social responsibilities. By jointly carrying out public welfare activities such as voluntary tree planting and poverty alleviation with local communities, it has effectively improved the lives of residents. At the same time, cultural activities such as the celebration of Peru's Independence Day, traditional dance competitions during the Lima Rose Festival, environmental protection innovation competitions, and sports events on Construction Workers' Day have been held, building a bridge for cultural exchanges between China and Peru and vividly interpreting the responsibility and commitment of Chinese enterprises.
With the full operation of the San Gabán III Hydropower Station, the power consumption problem of over one million residents in southern Peru will be effectively alleviated, which is of great significance for improving people's livelihoods and driving regional economic growth. This hydropower station will also further promote the transformation of Peru's energy structure towards green and low-carbon development, and become a model project for China and Peru to deepen cooperation and seek common development in the energy field.
