On April 30, significant progress was made in the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway project (the section within the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic). The pre-qualification announcement for the general contracting project of the station front engineering for the ZJWZQ-4 to 11 bidding sections, excluding the early-start sections, was officially released. Previously, the three bidding sections of the early-stage controlled tunnel project within the territory of Kyrgyzstan had started construction, with a winning bid amount of 4.1 billion yuan. The entire line project is expected to officially break ground by the end of June this year, with a planned construction period of six years, and is expected to be completed and open to traffic in June 2031.
This project has been approved by the competent authorities of the governments of China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, as well as the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Kyrgyz Republic. The funds are provided by the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Co., Ltd. The tendering work is undertaken by the Kyrgyzstan branch of China Railway International Co., Ltd., and China Railway Materials International Tendering Co., Ltd. serves as the tendering agency.
The section of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway within the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic is located in Naryn Region and Jalal-Abad Region in the southeast of the country. The railway line starts from Tuergaite Mountain at the China-Kyrgyzstan border and connects to the section within China. The line passes through Alpa, crosses the Mordo Tau Mountain, and after crossing the Arabka River, a transshipment station is set up in Makmal. Then it crosses the Fergana Mountain to the west, makes use of the existing railway passage north of Jalal-Abad, extends south around Jalal-Abad city to Jalal-Abad South Station, and finally reaches the border. The total length of the line is 304.94 kilometers. Among them, the section from Tuergaite (Kyrgyzstan) to Makmal adopts the standard gauge, with a length of 167.537 kilometers; the section from Makmal to Jalal-Abad adopts the broad gauge, with a length of 138.768 kilometers. The entire line has a total of 20 stations, 46 bridges with a total length of 15.083 kilometers, and 27 tunnels with a total length of 103.86 kilometers. The total length of bridges and tunnels is 117.95 kilometers, accounting for 39% of the total line length.
This tender covers the entire station front engineering excluding the early-start sections of DK65+418.53~DIK77+883, DK145+614.33~DK158+880 and DK209+405~DK221+729.01, and is divided into the ZJWZQ-4 to 11 bidding sections. The estimated total bid amount for the 8 bidding sections is approximately 12.7 billion yuan. The planned start date is June 26, 2025, and the planned completion date is June 25, 2031. The actual start and completion times will be subject to the relevant notices and contract agreements of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Co., Ltd.
It is worth noting that the section of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway from Kashgar to Tuergaite within China has a total length of about 160 kilometers, and the pre-feasibility study has been completed. It is expected to start construction in the early stage of the 15th Five-Year Plan period. Kyrgyzstan currently has 470 kilometers of railway, all of which are of the broad gauge standard, and the north-south railway lines within the country are not connected to each other. Based on this, the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway adopts the "standard gauge + broad gauge" model. The section from Kashgar in China to Makmal in Kyrgyzstan adopts the 1435mm standard gauge, and a transshipment yard is set up in Makmal. The section from Makmal to Andijan adopts the 1520mm broad gauge. In the future, the planned north-south railway line in Kyrgyzstan will also be extended from Makmal to the capital Bishkek. The advancement of this railway project will greatly improve the transportation pattern of Kyrgyzstan, and at the same time, inject strong impetus into the economic and trade cooperation and regional development among China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
