On July 3, 2025, Shenfu Demonstration Zone in Liaoning Province achieved a major breakthrough in the energy sector, and the first thermal power unit coupled with supercapacitor energy storage frequency regulation project in Northeast China officially started construction. The project is invested and constructed by Liaoning Datang International Shendong Thermal Power Co., Ltd., with a total investment of 27.51 million yuan and a construction scale of 10MW × 10min supercapacitor energy storage system. This innovative project marks significant progress in the transformation of thermal power flexibility and the construction of power grid auxiliary service capabilities in the Northeast region.
The project adopts internationally leading supercapacitor technology and is equipped with two 5MW × 10min supercapacitor compartments, which are currently the world's largest single units. It is also equipped with four integrated converter and boost machines, a 6kV medium voltage distribution compartment, and an intelligent frequency control compartment to build an efficient energy conversion system.
Compared with conventional lithium battery energy storage, this project has three major technological advantages: millisecond level response speed can completely solve the problems of reverse regulation and response delay in thermal power frequency regulation process; The ultra long cycle life brings significant economic improvements throughout the entire lifecycle; The intrinsic safety design completely avoids the risk of thermal runaway.
