China Power Construction Group Co., Ltd. has successfully won the bid for a large-scale seawater desalination project in Basra Province, Iraq, with a contract amount of up to 4 billion US dollars. This project is Iraq's first large-scale seawater desalination facility, which will significantly improve the freshwater supply for local residents and industrial development after completion.

The project site is located in Basra Province in southern Iraq, which has long been facing severe water scarcity issues. Due to multiple factors such as climate change, river pollution, and dam construction in upstream countries, the water resources situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate. According to World Bank data, the per capita water resources in Iraq have sharply decreased from 5000 cubic meters in the 20th century to less than 1000 cubic meters currently, far below the internationally recognized standard for water scarcity.

China Electric Power Construction Group Co., Ltd. has rich project experience in the field of seawater desalination in the Middle East. Previously, the company had successfully delivered the Taweelah seawater desalination plant with a daily processing capacity of 900000 cubic meters in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which is currently the world's largest reverse osmosis seawater desalination facility. In addition, the Rabigh 3 and Jubail seawater desalination plants (both with a daily processing capacity of 600000 cubic meters) built in Saudi Arabia have also received high recognition from the industry.

The Iraqi government stated that the implementation of the Basra seawater desalination project will effectively alleviate the local water resource crisis and provide important guarantees for regional economic development. China Electric Power Construction Group Co., Ltd. will fully leverage its technological advantages and project management experience in the field of seawater desalination to ensure high-quality and timely completion of projects. The successful signing of this project marks a further increase in the influence of Chinese enterprises in the international water engineering field.
