Recently, the Irish Planning Commission officially approved the planning order for the Dart+Coastal North project, marking a new important stage in the construction of railway transportation in Ireland and bringing about a new transformation for commuting in the Dublin area and surrounding areas.
The Dart+CoastalNorth project is of great significance as it will extend the electric Dublin Area Rapid Transit (Dart) commuter network from Malahead to Drogheda, covering a distance of up to 37 kilometers. In addition to the core initiative of electrification, the project also covers the signal reset work of the line from Malahead to Drogheda McBride station, which is currently served by the Irish Railways (IE) diesel mainline.

In terms of infrastructure construction, the project planning is comprehensive. The reconstruction work of the existing track will be carried out in an orderly manner at the Droheda McBride station, Malashid station, Krongren station, and the intersection of Hors and Donaghmid station. Drogheda McBride station will also build a new platform and be equipped with comprehensive infrastructure to fully support the smooth operation of Dart trains at the intersection of Hull Dublin city center and Hull Hull.
In addition, the project also includes a series of related engineering projects. The civil engineering, bridge construction, and auxiliary engineering will be carried out simultaneously, and the Huosi Hub Station and Donameda Station will be improved. The warehouses of Fairview and Drogheda will also be modified to adapt to the new Dart fleet provided by Alstom. At the same time, the track layout in the northern part of Malixi will be reconfigured with the addition of turning facilities to avoid any impact on adjacent residential areas during operation.
With the approval of the planning order, the procurement process immediately begins, and design and construction contractors will be designated. The detailed design and construction of the project are expected to be advanced for a period of three years. Jim Mead, CEO of Irish Rail, stated that the provision of Dart services will fundamentally change the way existing and new communities commute along this railway corridor, making travel more sustainable, frequent, and reliable. It is worth mentioning that this is the third Dart+project to obtain planning permission. Previously, the Dart+West Railway project was approved in July 2024, and the Dart+Southwest project was approved in November 2024. At present, the preliminary design work for the Dart+Binhai Southwest project is in full swing, and a new Dart+fleet maintenance and repair plant is also actively being constructed in Maynooth. The future of Irish railway transportation is full of infinite possibilities due to the advancement of these projects. Editor/Cheng Liting
