Driven by the global energy transition wave, countries are accelerating their deployment of renewable energy, striving to seize the opportunity in this green transformation. As an important economy in the Middle East, Türkiye is also actively planning a blueprint for energy change. Recently, Türkiye's government announced an ambitious renewable energy development plan, and at the same time, it launched in-depth cooperation talks with the delegation of the United Arab Emirates, which has injected strong impetus into the future development of Türkiye's energy sector.

The government of Türkiye plans to significantly increase the installed capacity of renewable energy in the country from 30GW to 120GW by 2035, realizing a fourfold growth. The announcement of this ambitious goal coincided with the visit to Türkiye by the delegation of the United Arab Emirates led by Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar. The purpose of this visit is clear, aiming to deeply explore joint investment opportunities in the fields of renewable energy and energy storage, and work together to explore new markets for green energy.

During the exchange, both parties discussed a wide range of key areas, including solar energy, onshore wind power, offshore wind power, pumped storage, and technology transfer initiatives. These rich and in-depth contents have constructed a clear strategic roadmap for bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of clean energy, indicating the direction and focus of cooperation.

Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Türkiye, stressed on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that Türkiye expects to further deepen strategic cooperation in the field of renewable energy by signing an intergovernmental memorandum of understanding with the United Arab Emirates. This will not only help strengthen the national energy infrastructure, improve the stability and sustainability of energy supply, but also vigorously promote the realization of Türkiye's 2053 net zero goal, setting an example for regional energy transformation.

In addition, the talks also focused on the potential investment in offshore wind power, high-voltage DC transmission lines, pumped storage hydropower facilities and other aspects. If these projects can be successfully promoted, they will bring a qualitative leap to Türkiye's energy structure optimization. However, Türkiye's plan to quadruple the installed capacity of renewable energy is facing huge financial challenges, which is expected to require about 108 billion dollars of investment. However, Türkiye's efforts to accelerate the deployment of solar energy are obvious to all. The Bor solar energy project covering photovoltaic and photothermal technologies is one of its powerful initiatives. This initiative was promoted after a series of agreements were reached with the United Arab Emirates, including the US $27 billion framework agreement signed in 2023, and a memorandum of understanding between Masdar and the Ministry of Energy of Türkiye. The close cooperation between Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates in the field of renewable energy undoubtedly brings broad development opportunities for both sides. With the gradual implementation of various cooperation agreements, Türkiye is expected to achieve leapfrog development in the field of renewable energy and inject new vitality into domestic energy transformation and economic growth.Editor/Cheng Liting
