More than a decade since the the Belt and Road Initiative was put forward, it has brought tangible development opportunities to countries along the Belt and Road. Many cooperation projects have lit up the road of regional connectivity like bright stars. In Southeast Asia, the Malaysia East Coast Railway Project jointly promoted by China and Malaysia is a model of China Malaysia practical cooperation under the the Belt and Road Initiative. On March 16, 2026, the track from Kota Bharu to Ermao section of the Ma Dong Railway project was officially laid, marking an important milestone in the system installation, testing, and commissioning phase, laying a solid foundation for its opening and operation.

The significance of the Malaysia East Coast Railway project is extraordinary. The East Coast region of Malaysia has abundant natural resources and enormous development potential, but for a long time, the relatively weak transportation infrastructure has hindered further economic development in the area. The Malaysia East Rail project is like a steel artery, connecting multiple important states along the east coast of Malaysia, tightly linking previously relatively isolated areas, providing convenient channels for personnel flow and material transportation, promoting economic exchanges and cooperation between regions, and promoting balanced development of the east coast of Malaysia.

China and Malaysia join hands to overcome project difficulties

Amir Hamza Azizan, the Second Minister of Finance of Malaysia, stated at the track laying ceremony that the 519 kilometer section of the Kota Bharu to Ngo Ma section of the track has been completed ahead of schedule, fully demonstrating the efficient and close cooperation between Malaysia and China in the project promotion process. During the project construction process, the Chinese and Malaysian teams closely communicated and supported each other, overcoming many difficulties and challenges together. From overcoming technical difficulties to coordinating construction progress, from personnel training to material allocation, every link embodies the hard work and wisdom of both sides, reflecting the spirit of the Chinese and Malaysian people working together and achieving win-win cooperation.

The Chief Secretary of the Malaysian government, Azri, also emphasized that the Malaysia East Rail is not only a national strategic asset of Malaysia, but also a symbol of close cooperation between Malaysia and China. After the railway is completed, it will bring a more modern, efficient, and safe travel experience to the Malaysian people. In the past, people in the East Coast region mainly relied on highways for transportation, which not only took a long time but was also greatly affected by factors such as weather. The opening of the Ma Dong Railway will greatly shorten travel time, improve travel comfort and safety. At the same time, it will also bring about changes to Malaysia's transportation system, optimize the layout of the transportation network, improve overall transportation efficiency, and promote the development of related industries such as logistics and tourism.

High quality promotion of railway projects

As the contractor of the Ma Dong Railway project, China Communications Construction Group Co., Ltd. has always adhered to the construction concept of high quality and high standards. Deng Bo, the general manager of the Ma Dong Railway project, said that with the completion of the laying of the track from Kota Bharu to Ermao, the electric multiple units will soon start 8000 kilometers of fault free operation testing. This is a crucial step towards the opening and operation of the project, reflecting China's firm commitment to the project construction. China Communications Construction Corporation fully leverages its technological advantages and rich experience in railway construction, using advanced construction equipment and management methods to ensure project construction quality and progress. At the same time, China also focuses on cultivating local technical talents to provide strong support for the long-term development of Malaysia's railway industry.
