On March 20, 2026, the civil construction of the eastern extension expressway upgrade and renovation project of the main road in the north of Urumqi started. After the completion of this east-west transportation artery that runs through the northern part of the city, it will directly connect to the East Ring Expressway, greatly improving regional traffic efficiency.

The project starts from Qidaowan Road in the west, crosses the Petrochemical Special Line Railway and Lucaogou Railway in the east, and ends at the Tiechanggou Interchange of the East Ring Expressway. It has a total length of 13.5 kilometers, a red line width of 60 meters, and is planned as a two-way eight lane expressway. The construction content covers the entire system of engineering, including roads, bridges and culverts, comprehensive pipelines, rainwater and sewage, power and fire protection, traffic safety, and lighting. After the completion of the project, it will connect multiple main road networks such as Donglong Ring Expressway, Wukui Expressway, Airport Expressway, Wuwu Highway, Beijing Road, and Midong Avenue. At present, the 1.38-kilometer section from Qidaowan to East Second Ring Road has been opened to traffic first.

The construction unit is making every effort to promote project construction, strictly implementing safety production responsibilities, and conducting a comprehensive safety hazard investigation; Adhere to high standard construction and strictly control materials and quality; Refine the tasks during the construction period, quantify them on a weekly basis, and implement them by individuals to ensure that the goals of each stage are completed on schedule.

Improve the backbone road network and empower urban development

In recent years, Urumqi has continuously improved its two horizontal, two vertical, and three ring multi shot backbone road network, strengthened its urban rapid transportation function, promoted high-quality economic and social development, and integrated urban transportation.
