On March 25, 2026, the construction of the new airport in Guangzhou was held in Gaoming District, Foshan City. As a major transportation infrastructure in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, the total investment of the project is 41.8 billion yuan, which will inject strong aviation momentum into the west bank of the the Pearl River Estuary.

Fill in the gaps on the west bank

For a long time, the civil aviation services of Foshan, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, Yunfu and other cities on the west bank of the the Pearl River Estuary have been relatively weak, relying heavily on Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen Bao'an and Hong Kong Macao airports. The location of Guangzhou New Airport in Genghe Town, Gaoming District is precisely to break this unbalanced situation. After the project is put into operation, it will form a pattern of east-west coordination and complementary functions with airports such as Baiyun, Bao'an, Hong Kong, and Macau. It will not only effectively cover a wider hinterland, but also promote the formation of a world-class airport cluster with a more balanced layout and wider radiation in the Greater Bay Area, further enhancing the overall competitiveness of the Greater Bay Area as an international aviation hub.

Implement throughput targets in stages

The current phase of the new airport project is designed with an annual passenger throughput of 30 million and a cargo and mail throughput of 500000 tons. It is expected to be completed and put into operation during the 15th Five Year Plan period. By 2050, it will meet the demand for 60 million passengers and 2.2 million tons of cargo and mail. In terms of hardware, the project covers an area of approximately 1213 hectares, with a planned layout of 3 runways and 2 terminal buildings.
