Under the scorching Caribbean sun, Havana's streets often appear restless due to fuel shortages. For Cuba, energy is not only the fuel for development, but also the lifeline for survival. At present, this island nation is deeply mired in a serious energy crisis, with a daily fuel demand of about 100000 barrels and a glaring gap of only 40% domestic self-sufficiency rate.

But in this midst of anxiety, a force from the East is injecting - energy cooperation between China and Cuba is transitioning from simple trade to deep geological exploration and technology sharing, attempting to find black gold through the eyes of technology in this land considered "oil poor".

Fill the vacuum in exploration and analysis

The core of this collaboration is not simply equipment assistance, but a precise 'geological surgery'. At the latest technology exchange conference in Havana, the compilation of Cuba's first geochemical atlas became the focus. This is not only a map, but also the first systematic deconstruction of underground chemical elements across the country. Due to the lack of high-end analytical equipment, experts from the Cuban Petroleum Research Center sent samples to Chinese laboratories for interpretation using advanced technology there.

This sampling in Havana and analysis in Beijing precisely compensates for Cuba's shortcomings in the field of geochemistry. At the same time, the drill bits of China Petroleum Great Wall Drilling Engineering Co., Ltd. are penetrating deep into the El Frail é and Baradero oil fields in Mayabek Province and Matanzas Province, respectively. Currently, the majority of drilling tasks for oil wells in Cuba are undertaken by the company.

From oil and gas wellhead to geothermal steam

The perspective of cooperation has long surpassed traditional oil and gas fields. The geologists of both sides are not only focused on undeveloped and exploitable mineral deposits, but also on the future of energy transformation - key minerals and geothermal energy. At a high-level scientific conference, the identification of key new energy minerals such as lithium and cobalt, as well as the assessment of Cuba's geothermal resource potential, were officially included in the agenda. China not only brings drilling technology, but also provides support in solar energy parks and energy storage systems to help Cuba build a diversified energy structure. This layout of the entire industry chain aims to break Cuba's absolute dependence on imported fuels.

The Only Way to Energy Sovereignty

For the Cuban authorities, joining hands with China is not only an economic account, but also a political account. Under the increasingly complex international blockade, achieving energy sovereignty is the bottom line for Cuba's survival. As Cuban experts have pointed out, geological exploration is the first domino of a country's development, and only by understanding its financial situation can subsequent economic development be initiated. Keywords: oil extraction, natural gas

Although the road ahead is long, with the continuous investment of Chinese funds and technology, as well as the growth of local professionals in cooperation in Cuba, this Caribbean island nation is trying to end its history of passively waiting for oil tankers by mastering the lifeline of resources. When the first batch of new geological data is transmitted back from the Chinese laboratory to Havana, the dawn of Cuba's energy independence may lie within it.Editor/Cheng Liting
