In May 2026, the Global Solar Council released the "2026-2029 African Photovoltaic Market Outlook Report". Data shows that by 2025, the total new photovoltaic capacity in Africa will reach 4498 megawatts, a year-on-year increase of 54%, setting a record high in history. Distributed solar energy accounts for 44%, almost equaling centralized photovoltaics, and Africa is accelerating its transition from energy scarcity to green empowerment.

The report shows that South Africa will add 1602 megawatts by 2025, of which distributed solar energy will account for 1202 megawatts; Nigeria, with a distributed outbreak, installed 803 megawatts throughout the year, ranking second in Africa with a year-on-year growth of 141%; Egypt and Algeria have added 500 MW and 400 MW respectively, with nearly 10 countries having installed over 100 MW. Keywords: Photovoltaic new energy information、solar energy storage projects

The infrastructure of the African power grid is weak, and the combination of distributed photovoltaics and energy storage has become the core solution to address electricity pain points. The largest off grid photovoltaic project in Angola is equipped with 75.26 megawatt hours of energy storage, while Egypt is building a hybrid project of 1.1 gigawatts of photovoltaic and 200 megawatt hours of energy storage. At present, more than 60 green hydrogen projects have been announced in Africa, and over 600 microgrids have been put into operation, benefiting nearly one million people. The cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaic power stations constructed through China Africa cooperation exceeds 1.5 gigawatts.Editor/Gao Xue
