Deepening oil and gas cooperation between China and Kazakhstan, working together to tap into the potential of regional oil and gas resources

On May 29, 2026, QazaqGaz, the national oil and gas company of Kazakhstan, reached a consensus with CNOOC to expand the scope of upstream oil and gas cooperation. Both sides will jointly develop new hydrocarbon exploration blocks in the local area, increase resource exploration and exploitation efforts using cutting-edge technology, and build a solid foundation for energy cooperation between the two countries.

According to the latest energy development plan formulated by both parties, the CNOOC international team will conduct comprehensive technical analysis and geophysical surveys on multiple high-quality exploration sites provided by Kazakhstan. Both parties have agreed to use cutting-edge technologies such as seismic data secondary analysis and digital modeling to accurately assess the oil and gas reserves of the new block and accelerate the implementation and construction of the cooperation project. The oil and gas industry is an important support for the economic development of Kazakhstan. The extraction of existing oil and gas production areas has entered a stable stage, and there is an urgent need to explore new oil and gas resources to ensure long-term energy production capacity supply. Kazakhstan insists on promoting the opening up of the energy sector to the outside world, actively introducing internationally renowned energy enterprises and external capital, leveraging foreign technology and funds, revitalizing undeveloped oil and gas resources within the country, and continuously expanding the total amount of oil and gas reserves.Editor/Gong Ziwei
