Mitsubishi Corporation has signed two contracts for delivery of new locomotives and rolling stock with Myanmar Railway Corporation, a state-owned company in Myanmar.
The first contract involved 66 rail vehicles for the Yangon Loop Railway project, and the second contract involved 180 rail vehicles for the Yangon-Mandalay Railway project.
The total cost of these two projects is close to 663 million U.S. dollars and will be funded by the international yen loan agreement signed by the Myanmar government and the Japanese government.
These rail vehicles will use Japanese components and equipment and will be manufactured by the Spanish rolling stock manufacturer Railway Construction and Assistance Company. These vehicles will be delivered to Myanmar in phases between 2023 and 2025.
The YCR project is part of the modernization and development plan of the Yangon Ring Railway. The vehicle will run on a 46km track that surrounds the center of Yangon, Myanmar's largest commercial city. At present, it takes about 170 minutes for each train to complete the loop line. The modernization and improvement of the line will shorten the running time to 110 minutes.
The YM project is part of the second phase of the Yangon-Mandalay railway line. The rail vehicle delivered by MC will run on a 620km track. The line will connect Yangon to Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city, through Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar. After the line is improved, the train’s operating time will be reduced. Reduced from 15 hours to about 8 hours. Editor/Sang Xiaomei
