Recently, the Kaoura-Foga dam construction project in Niger was officially launched at a ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Brigitte Rafini.
The dam will be built in the city of Badaguichi, Illela Province, Tava Province. The project includes the two cities of Bada Aguichi and Allakaye, as well as the movement of Illela and Bouza. It is planned to store 2.3 million cubic meters of water and 400 hectares of dams to protect the watershed.
The entire project was funded by the Niger State Government in cooperation with the German Government.
Expectations for the Kaoura-Foga Dam Project
Niger is facing recurring food crises due to unstable and insufficient rainfall. According to a survey conducted by the National Early Warning System in April 2010, more than 7 million people (46% of the population of West African countries) live with moderate (25.5%) to severe (22.2%) food insecurity.
Therefore, after the completion of the Kaoura-Foga dam project, it is expected to promote the development of agricultural activities by strengthening irrigated crops, fish farming and more than 400 hectares of feed production to solve this problem.
This will directly affect the income of more than 15,000 households and have a positive impact on the surrounding areas of the project. The project is part of Niger's decision to mobilize water resources as a cornerstone of its Rural Development Strategy (RDS), which aims to ensure national food security. Editor/Huang Lijun
