The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently commissioned the construction of the four-story Pokuase overpass at Pokuase Junction in Pokuase/Pokoasi, a suburb of Accra, the capital of West Africa. The four-story Pokuase overpass is the first such overpass in Ghana and the entire West Africa region. It is also the second such overpass in the African continent after the four-story Edchcombe overpass in Durban, South Africa.
As part of the Accra Urban Transport Project, the Pokuase Interchange was constructed by China Sino-American Engineering Group Co., Ltd. in 36 months. These projects are supervised by the Ghana Urban Roads Agency (DUR) under the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
Project scope
The four-story Pokuase interchange project involves the construction of 6.5 kilometers of Awoshie to Pokuase highway, the ACP junction to the junction of Awoshie to Nsawam Road, two footbridges with ramps for the disabled, and the widening of Nsawam Road by approximately two kilometers.
Other projects include the construction of a total of 12 kilometers of urban roads, drainage systems, the provision of street lights, and the construction of a tunnel to supply water to communities that are not connected to the Ghana Water Company Limited network.
Social development work
In addition, the project also involves social development work, including restoration of the Kpobiman Women's Group Center, which trains women in bread, pastry, soap and bead making; and restoration of the Manchie Gari factory, which is used to process cassava into cassava and starch.
As part of the project, the Gua Sacred Forest covering an area of 3 hectares was also protected, and 14 basic schools were equipped with ICT laboratories to help train approximately 10,000 students in Ga North, South, Central and West cities to learn about information And knowledge and technology in communication.
