The Chinese only know that there was a monk who went to India to learn Buddhist scriptures during the Tang Dynasty, but few people know that China once severely beat India, and even nearly occupied the Indian capital, New Delhi.
In 1951, the withdrawal of British troops from India declared the complete independence of the country. After independence, India has always regarded itself as a major power in South Asia, and believes that India should also play the role of a talker just like Britain was to the European continent. So India's wise Prime Minister Nehru turned his attention to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the north. Still influenced by British strategic thinking, Nehru believed that Tibet should become an "independent country" and, as an ally of India, a "buffer country" between India and China.
In 1953, representatives from India who visited China were cordially received by Premier Zhou. Since both India and China belonged to the third world countries that had just been established, they were both countries with large populations, had similar national conditions, and were neighbors with a strip of water, Premier Zhou said. It also specially proposed the concept of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence to the Indian embassy to release goodwill to the other side. However, the goodwill of the Chinese government, in Nehru's eyes, turned into a sign of weakness.
In 1959, India instigated and supported the rebellion of the former serf owners in Tibet. Such a perverse rebellion, the suffering Tibetan people would not agree to in the first place. So without too much bloodshed, the rebellion was resolved mainly through negotiation. Only the most stubborn elements eventually escaped to India, and the Nehru government sheltered them and took in the Dalai Lama.
Realizing that inciting "Tibetan independence" could not be achieved, Nehru set his sights on the 1,700-kilometer long border between China and India. The Sino-Indian border has never been formally demarcated, but is demarcated according to the natural border. Therefore, there are many disputes, among which the eastern section is the most controversial, because here in the 1930s, the British once forged a national border called the "McMahon Line". According to the "McMahon Line" division method, China's southern Tibet region will lose 92,000 square kilometers of land, which is equivalent to an area the size of two Taiwanese islands.
On October 12, 1962, the Nehru government officially declared war on China. The pretext for declaring war was to ask China for 125,000 square kilometers of land, including the area south of the "McMahon Line". garrisoned troops and drove Chinese soldiers and civilians beyond the "national borders" drawn by India itself.
Since the founding of China, in order to defend its national interests, it has successively engaged in self-defense wars with many opponents. In a series of wars including aid to Korea, counterattack in self-defense against India, and conflict on Zhenbao Island between China and the Soviet Union, the counterattack in self-defense against India in 1962 can be regarded as a complete victory over the enemy in the history of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
By the end of the war, the People's Liberation Army had attacked to less than 300 kilometers away from the Indian capital, New Delhi. India even dug trenches around the capital, preparing to rely on the streets to fight to the death. Just when India was desperate, the Chinese army unilaterally announced a ceasefire and voluntarily retreated to 20 kilometers behind the line of actual control between China and India in November 1959, showing the tolerance and freedom of a big country.
However, just as the Indian army was completely defeated, a military order from the Party Central Committee was sent to the front line, ordering the troops to immediately cease fire across the board, end the war of self-defense, and take the initiative to retreat back to the actual control line in 1959, and also captured a large amount of baggage and thousands of prisoners. returned to India together.
This battle not only played the prestige of the Chinese army, but also played two big jokes. Despite the fact that the front line has been defeated, the Indian media is still happy to promote India's military victory to the people. However, what is even more amusing is that when India was covering the escape from the Kumaon camp, the Indians, who were frightened by the momentum of the Chinese army, shot 7788 of the shells they were carrying.
The captured Indian Army 7th Brigade Major General Darvi recorded in his memoir "Snow in the Himalayas"; "The war with the Eastern Military Region started at the same time as the Karakoram Pass in the west, and the Chinese army has already hit the important town. Chushule, as everyone in India knows, is about 300 kilometers away from New Delhi."
Another source is Subramanian-Indian retired brigadier general; "After losing Gurong Mountain and Rezan Pass, the 114th Brigade of the Indian Army, which suffered heavy losses, has no intention of fighting, and all troops fled to Leh in a hurry, There is no single soldier in the Chushul Valley. All Indians know that Chushul is only more than 300 kilometers away from New Delhi, and New Delhi has already begun to dig trenches...".
The Chinese army can come and go freely in India. It can fight and withdraw when it wants to. It completely occupies the initiative on the battlefield. The reason why the Chinese army wants to withdraw is not that it cannot defeat it, but that it does not want to fight anymore. Thinking of this high level of India, I can't help but feel chills down my spine. The military strength gap between China and India is really too big.
In fact, in 1962, Indians really had to thank China. China taught impetuous and aggressive Indians a solid lesson. India must not provoke China. If the Indian army dared to invade Chinese territory, the Chinese army would never Begrudge the next round of heavy blows. Therefore, since 1962, although India has repeatedly made troubles on the border, it has never dared to take a step forward. Editor/He Yuting
