A 150 kWp solar power plant funded by the Green Climate Fund has been developed in the Kunene region of Namibia. Environment and Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta confirmed the report and said the plant marked the beginning of a new era in Namibia's response to the effects of climate change. The challenge for the country is to achieve the goals of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The solar power plant is part of a project called "Namibia's Community-based Natural Resource Management". This is an initiative launched by the government a few years ago to address the effects of climate change. It is fully funded by the United Nations Green Climate Fund for a total of $ 9 million.

Solar potential in Namibia

The power plant will provide 9,200 people with electricity in Kunene, one of the driest parts of the country. Namibia has huge solar energy production potential. The country is the driest country on the African continent, with 300 days of sunshine each year.

However, Namibia's largest solar power plant is a 45.5MW facility built by the Spanish company Alten Energías Renovables. The project is a joint venture between Alten, NamPower and Namibian solar companies Mangrove, Talyeni and First Place Investment. The other solar parks in operation in the country each have a capacity of less than 5 MW and are distributed throughout Namibia. The country aims to get 70% of its installed capacity from renewable energy sources by 2030. Editor / Li Dan
