      On May 20, 2023 local time, Angolan President Lourenço attended the closure ceremony of the Kaikai Hydropower Station in Angola, undertaken by China Energy Construction Gezhouba Group, and pressed the button symbolizing the closure of the Kwanza River. This marks the completion of the milestone node of the largest hydropower station under construction in Angola, and officially entered the construction stage of the main dam project.

      Lourenço said that the closure of the Kaikai hydropower station is an important milestone in advancing this important project. The Angolan government is committed to making every effort to generate electricity on the first unit on the expected date (end of October 2026), and the project will be completed in 2028. This will improve the quality of life in Angola. Provide greater support in terms of energy supply, solving local employment, and promoting the economic and social development of the surrounding communities of the project, benefiting the Angolan people.

      Borges said that the Kaikai hydropower station is a project that President Lourenco pays close attention to and prioritizes. Its installed capacity is 2,172 megawatts. After completion, it will become the country's largest power center, which is in line with the government's commitment to firmly fulfill the goal of power security.       Borges added that during the peak construction period of the Kaikai Hydropower Station, about 8,000 local jobs will be directly provided, and during the operation and maintenance period, thousands of professional personnel in power station construction and management will be trained in Angola. In addition, it also indirectly promotes the development of industries such as cement, steel bars, steel products, and machinery.

      Liu Huailiang emphasized that after the completion of the hydropower station, the average annual power generation will reach 856.6 billion GWh, and the annual greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by about 7.2 million tons. The income from power generation will also be used for other projects such as infrastructure construction, mining and other natural resource development. After the formation of the reservoir area, it will also have the functions of peak regulation and flood control, and will greatly improve the conditions for water resource utilization.

      The Angola Kaikai Hydropower Project is located in the middle section of the Kwanza River, the largest river in Angola, about 230 kilometers away from the capital Luanda. It is known as the Three Gorges Project in Africa. The project was signed and landed under the framework of high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road and the deepening of China-Africa production capacity cooperation. 2023 is the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Angola. Angola has become China's second largest trading partner in Africa, and is one of the first African countries to sign cooperation documents with China on the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.Editor/Ma Xue
