China National Petroleum Group (CNPC) has reported another good news in the African market. Recently, the consortium of China National Petroleum Pipeline Bureau and China Petroleum Technology and Development Co., Ltd. successfully won the bid for the EPC general contracting project from Ntoya Gas Field to Madimba Natural Gas Processing Plant in Tanzania. The construction of this key energy infrastructure marks a new stage in China-Tanzania energy cooperation.

Project Overview: 34 km of energy arteries

Located in Mutwara province in southern Tanzania, the project will build a 34-kilometer-long, 14-inch high-pressure gas pipeline connecting the newly developed Ntoya gas field to the 210 million cubic feet per day Madimba gas processing plant. The project includes complete EPC services for supporting facilities such as the first station, valve room, and receiving station, covering the whole industry chain links such as design, procurement, construction, and trial operation. After the completion of the project, it will significantly improve Tanzania's natural gas transmission capacity and provide a stable guarantee for local industrial development and people's livelihood.

Resource base: 1.8 trillion cubic feet of reserves

The Ntoya gas field is jointly developed by Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation, Aminex PLC and operator ARA Petroleum Tanzania, and has been licensed by the Tanzanian Ministry of Energy for development in the third quarter of 2024. Available exploration data shows that the field has reserves of 1.8 trillion cubic feet, and the test well produces 20 million standard cubic feet per day. According to the sales agreement signed between APT and TPDC, production is expected to reach 40 million to 60 million cubic feet per day in the first year of operation, and will gradually increase to 140 million cubic feet per day in the future.

Technical strength: whole industry chain solutions

As China's national team in the field of oil and gas storage and transportation engineering construction, PetroChina Pipeline Bureau has completed the construction of more than 6,000 kilometers of pipelines in more than 10 countries in Africa. The project will apply China's self-developed high-pressure pipeline welding technology, intelligent detection system and digital management platform to ensure construction quality and safety in tropical climates. It is particularly noteworthy that the project includes advanced technologies such as intelligent diameter measurement, which provide data support for subsequent operation and maintenance.

Strategic significance: Deepen China-Africa energy cooperation

This project is PetroChina's first EPC project for natural gas pipelines in Tanzania, and it is also a concrete practice of implementing the cooperation in the energy field of the nine projects of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Tanzania's energy minister said the project will accelerate the implementation of the country's "natural gas industrialization" strategy and is expected to create more than 1,000 local jobs. Industry analysts pointed out that with the acceleration of the development of oil and gas resources in East Africa, the service capabilities of Chinese enterprises in the whole industry chain are gaining more and more international recognition, laying the foundation for subsequent participation in regional energy interconnection projects.

At present, the preliminary work of the project has been fully launched, and it is planned to enter the main construction stage in 2025. The completion of the pipeline will not only optimize Tanzania's energy structure, but also become an important link connecting East Africa's natural gas production areas and consumer markets, injecting new momentum into regional economic development.(This article is from the official website of Seetao www.seetao.com.
