The coordination committee established as part of the agreement between the governments of Russia and Myanmar has held its first meeting to discuss nuclear cooperation between the two countries. These meetings were held on June 27th and 28th, involving the regulatory framework for bilateral cooperation between Russian nuclear company Rosatom and Myanmar.

Rosatom Deputy Director General Nikolai Spassky met with Aung Zeya, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of Myanmar. After the meeting, the two signed an agreement outlining the cooperation. The intergovernmental agreement between the two countries was first signed in February. On this basis, the two countries agree to work towards the development of small nuclear power plants and the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Spassky also held meetings with the Minister of Science and Technology, Myo Thein Kyaw, and the Minister of Electrification, Taung Khan. According to Rosatom, the focus of these meetings is on the construction of power plants and the development of nuclear infrastructure in Myanmar based on Russian designs.

During the meeting, Rosatom submitted the pre feasibility study report for the thermal power plant project based on the memorandum of understanding signed by the Ministry of Electricity and Rosatom in November 2022 to the Ministry of Electricity.

In addition, the Ministry of Science and Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rosatom in the field of nuclear infrastructure assessment and strengthening. Last month, the British government announced that it would sanction Rosatom as part of a series of sanctions after the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The US government has also sanctioned Rosatom. France has been under review due to its ongoing relationship with nuclear companies, including the signing of a joint statement on research cooperation in 2021.Editor/XingWentao
