Zhongjing Petrochemical's PDH project is officially put into operation

Zhongjing Petrochemical successfully launched its 1 million ton/year PDH project on March 25th, with a total investment of 4 billion yuan. It is the largest single propane dehydrogenation to propylene unit in the world. This project introduces the cutting-edge Catofin process from Looms Corporation to ensure the provision of high-purity propylene raw materials for downstream polypropylene production. In addition, the project also produces 50000 tons of hydrogen products annually, which provides necessary raw materials for Zhongjing Petrochemical's carbon four industry, further improves the internal circulation industry chain of the enterprise, and enhances overall operational efficiency.

On March 26, 2024, the Shaoxing Ecological Environment Bureau publicly announced the approval opinions on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) documents for the integrated utilization of alkane resources of Zhejiang Yuanjin New Materials Co., Ltd. The environmental impact assessment of this project has made significant progress, indicating that the project is about to enter a new stage of development. It is understood that the first phase of the integrated project for the comprehensive utilization of alkane resources of Zhejiang Yuanjin New Materials Co., Ltd. started construction at the end of December 2020. The total investment scale of this project is huge, and it is one of the largest individual industrial projects in Shaoxing City. The first phase of the project plans to invest 11 billion yuan, aiming to achieve efficient, environmentally friendly, and comprehensive utilization of alkane resources.

This project will build a new 750000 ton/year propane dehydrogenation unit, using UOP process, two 300000 ton/year polypropylene units, one 300000 ton/year epoxy propane unit, and supporting 250000 ton/year hydrogen peroxide unit, hydrogen energy comprehensive utilization unit, etc. All the raw materials for the project, propane, are purchased externally, and the propylene produced is used as the raw material for the downstream polypropylene unit's epoxy propane unit. The hydrogen peroxide unit produces 50% hydrogen peroxide, with most of it used as the raw material for the epoxy propane unit, and the rest sold as products.

The continuous growth of propylene production capacity and the acceleration of raw material lightweighting process have led to a sustained increase in investment and construction enthusiasm for PDH projects. In the context of pursuing green development with carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the PDH route has demonstrated its unique competitiveness compared to traditional raw material routes such as integrated refining and coal to olefins. With many advantages such as single raw materials, high yield, few by-products, and cleanliness and environmental protection, the PDH project has been warmly pursued by the market. In recent years, China has ushered in a wave of PDH project construction, with many enterprises investing in the construction of PDH devices to seize market opportunities and promote industrial green transformation and upgrading. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, the PDH route will continue to expand its share in the total propylene production capacity and become the main driving force for the growth of propylene production capacity. According to statistics from Longzhong Information, with the addition of 600000 tons/year of PDH production capacity by Ningbo Formosa Plastics officially put into operation in January 2024, the total domestic PDH production capacity will reach 19.045 million tons/year. In addition, according to another statistical data, the planned new polypropylene production capacity for this year has reached 12.46 million tons, of which PDH production capacity accounts for half of the country, reaching as high as 6.56 million tons per year.
