According to the Mexican Hydrogen Trade Agency, there are currently at least 15 green hydrogen projects under development in Mexico, with a total investment of up to $20 billion.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners will invest $10 billion in a green hydrogen project in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. French developer HDF plans to build seven hydrogen projects in Mexico between 2024 and 2030, with a total investment of $2.5 billion. As a large economic country in Latin America, Mexico can become a favored hydrogen energy project development site for many large European and American countries, which is closely related to its unique geographical advantages.
Data show that the climate of Mexico is located in the continental climate and tropical climate, rainfall is more concentrated, most of the time sunshine, or the southern Hemisphere is one of the largest wind areas, very suitable for the layout of photovoltaic power plants and wind power projects, which is also the energy source of green hydrogen projects.
On the demand side, Mexico is adjacent to the US market, which has a very strong demand for green hydrogen, and the layout of green hydrogen projects in Mexico can sell green hydrogen to the US market at a shorter transportation cost, and even the California region bordering Mexico has recently experienced a shortage of hydrogen. Long-distance heavy cargo transportation between the two countries is also in urgent need of clean green hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions and transportation costs.
It is reported that the United States leading hydrogen energy company Cummins is developing fuel cells and hydrogen combustion engines for heavy trucks, the goal is to be fully put into production by 2027, heavy truck operators operating on the US-Mexico border have expressed strong interest in this, if they can buy competitive hydrogen, they plan to purchase hydrogen fuel cell heavy trucks to replace the existing diesel trucks.
