On June 13, construction began on five pumped storage power plants in Maoming, Guangdong province, and Guilin, Qinzhou, Guigang and Yulin, Guangxi. The batch of power stations are key implementation projects of the National Energy Administration's "Medium and Long-Term Pumped Storage Development Plan (2021-2035)", with a total installed capacity of 6 million kilowatts. After it is fully completed and put into operation by the end of 2029, it can consume 11.16 billion KWH of clean energy per year, meet the annual electricity demand of more than 5 million residential users, and correspondingly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8.4 million tons, effectively support the stable access of large-scale new energy to the power grid, and ensure the safe and stable operation of the power grid.

By then, the operation scale of the pumped storage power station of the Southern Power Grid Company will exceed 20 million kilowatts, accelerate the realization of the service "double carbon" goal, and help the construction of a new energy system and a new power system.

It is reported that the new batch of five pumped storage projects are located near the new energy center and power load center. Among them, the Guangdong Maoming Dianbai pumped storage power station is near the offshore wind power base, and the Guangxi Qinzhou pumped storage Power Station is located along the new land and sea corridor in the west, which will promote the stable access of new energy such as coastal nuclear power, photovoltaic and offshore wind power to the grid. Guanyang pumped-storage power Station in Guilin, Guangxi, after its completion, will directly help northern Guangxi build an integrated industrial base of "scenery and storage". The Guigang pumped-storage power station in Guangxi is located in the city center, which can greatly improve the adjustment capacity of the peak and valley load of the power grid.
