Recently, the European Commission has approved more than 110 million euros in grants from the European Regional Development Fund ERDF to transform the high-speed railway line from Madrid to Seville in Spain to build a smarter, sustainable and efficient transportation system.

The funds will be mainly used to update 435.2 kilometers of infrastructure out of a total of 471 kilometers of railway lines to ensure that they comply with European railway interoperability standards and the specifications of the pan-European transport network TEN-T. This move will not only enhance the safety and reliability of the railway line, but also improve its connectivity and accessibility in the pan-European railway network.

Elisa Ferreira, the European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform, said that intercity rail transportation should become a more popular choice for passengers, especially because it is a more environmentally friendly way to travel. The funds will support railway lines to adapt to the latest interoperability specifications, promote the establishment of an efficient and integrated railway system, and pave the way for the modernization and connectivity of the European railway network. At the same time, this will also promote economic activity in Spain and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The renovation project will cover many aspects, including replacing old rails and carriages, upgrading bridges and tunnels, transforming drainage systems, and modernizing buildings and facilities required for operations. In addition, access will also be improved to improve the overall quality, reliability and frequency of services.

These renovation measures are expected to enhance the attractiveness of rail services, thereby encouraging passengers to switch from road and air to more environmentally friendly rail travel, further reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This move will not only help achieve Europe's green travel goals, but will also make a positive contribution to the sustainable development of Spain and Europe as a whole.Editor/Cheng Ting
