Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil half a century ago, despite significant geographical and cultural differences, the two countries have experienced flourishing economic and trade cooperation, building a solid bridge that connects them. Practical collaboration in fields such as agriculture and technology has not only driven economic development but also deepened the friendship between their peoples. In trade, the complementary relationship between China and Brazil is evident, with China being Brazil's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years. Additionally, Brazil is China's largest trade partner in Latin America, offering Chinese companies expansive opportunities for investment and trade. This complementary trade model has led to mutual benefits and a win-win outcome.

During Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Brazil on November 20, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) and China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) signed four key agreements, outlining plant quarantine and sanitary requirements for product exports. These agreements include:

"Protocol on Plant Quarantine Requirements for Brazilian Fresh Grapes Exported to China" between GACC and MAPA"Protocol on Plant Quarantine Requirements for Brazilian Sorghum Exported to China" between GACC and MAPA"Protocol on Inspection and Quarantine Requirements for Brazilian Sesame Exported to China" between GACC and MAPA"Protocol on Quarantine and Sanitary Requirements for Brazilian Animal Feed Fishmeal, Fish Oil, and Other Aquatic Animal Proteins and Oils Exported to China" between GACC and MAPA

The signing of these protocols marks the approval of Brazilian fresh grapes, sorghum, sesame, and animal feed fishmeal, fish oil, and other aquatic animal proteins and oils for export to China. It is important to note that Brazilian exporters must complete the necessary compliance procedures before beginning trade with China. GACC registration is a required step, and importers should verify the export qualifications of their Brazilian partners. Additionally, for fish oil and fishmeal used in animal feed, obtaining the MARA (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs) feed import registration certificate should be initiated in advance.

The decision to grant these products export approval to China is based on multiple considerations. First, Brazilian products are renowned for their high quality in international markets. As the world’s fourth-largest grape producer, Brazil offers not only commonly cultivated varieties such as RED GLOBE, THOMPSON, and CRIMSON RED but also unique types like the raspberry-flavored seedless black grape BRS Vitória, and the balanced-sweet-and-sour BRS Nubia and BRS Isis. The approval of these products will undoubtedly enrich the diversity of options available to Chinese consumers.

Secondly, Brazil, as a major agricultural and resource-rich country, boasts significant production levels. With continuous advancements in agricultural technology and rising productivity, Brazil’s agricultural output has been consistently increasing. Given that China is a major grain consumer, most of its sorghum imports have traditionally come from the United States. Recent data reveals that Brazil's sorghum production has doubled in recent years, reaching 4.4 million tons, and with the approval for Brazil to export sorghum to China, Brazil is poised to become a key supplier to China in the future.

Furthermore, domestic market demand has also played a crucial role in driving this export decision. As the world’s largest sesame importer, China accounted for 36.2% of global sesame imports in 2023, valued at $1.53 billion.

As cooperation between China and Brazil deepens in areas such as agriculture and technology, we believe that more high-quality Brazilian products will enter the Chinese market in the future, further enriching the Chinese dining table and providing broader opportunities for collaboration between enterprises from both countries. The continued development of Sino-Brazilian economic and trade relations not only reflects the complementary and win-win cooperation model between the two sides but also demonstrates the ongoing strengthening of the deep friendship between their peoples. Let us look forward to the beginning of the next "Golden 50 Years" in China-Brazil relations.(This article is from the official website of Jian Dao www.seetao.com.
