Recently, Shanxi Electric Power Engineering Co., Ltd. (Shanxi Institute), a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group (CEEC), won the EPC tender for the 250-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic power generation project in Prey Veng, Cambodia. The contract is valued at approximately 1.691 billion yuan (US$233.1 million). As part of Cambodia's Power Development Master Plan (2022-2040), the project is located in the southeastern part of Cambodia, about 90 kilometers east of the capital Phnom Penh. The total designed installed capacity of the project is approximately 250 MW, and the construction area is about 253 hectares. The project will be developed on two plots, each with a 22 KV switch station. The project is expected to start construction next month and is scheduled to be put into operation in March 2026. Once completed, the project will greatly promote the development of renewable energy in Cambodia. The Ministry of Mines and Energy of Cambodia reported that after the project is put into operation, it is expected to help the country achieve its goal of having a photovoltaic power generation installed capacity of more than 1 GW by 2030.

In 2018, Cambodia introduced regulations on solar power generation, injecting new impetus into the development of photovoltaic systems in the country. The development of grid-scale solar energy in Cambodia only got started a year ago, with only a 10-megawatt pilot project at that time. According to the "Mekong Infrastructure Tracker" report by the think tank The Stimson Center, as of today, nine solar power plants have been connected to Cambodia's national power grid, with a power generation capacity of up to 444 megawatts. Two solar power plants currently under construction have a power generation capacity of 620 megawatts, and another four solar power plants are in the planning stage. Cambodia has abundant sunlight throughout the year, making it an ideal location for the development of solar energy. This natural resource advantage can significantly reduce production costs and enhance the competitiveness of solar products manufactured in Cambodia.
