Dubai renewable energy developer AMEA Power has announced that Egypt's first utility scale battery energy storage system (BESS) will be put into operation next month in Khombu, Aswan province. The system is paired with a 500 megawatt solar power station, with an energy storage capacity of 300 megawatt hours. It only takes 6 months from signing to completion, setting a new industry construction speed.
The project has received a $72 million loan support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank, which will enhance the resilience of Egypt's power grid and support its 4 GW emergency renewable energy plan. At the same time, the African Development Bank (AfDB) coordinated $184.1 million in financing for the "Obelisk" project in the province of Qena, Egypt. The project includes 1 gigawatt of solar energy and a 200 megawatt hour energy storage system, which is expected to be put into operation in the third quarter of next year, reducing 1 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and creating 4000 construction jobs.
