On June 16, 2025, a landmark commencement ceremony was held 17.5 kilometers east of Pana Town, Anduo County, Naqu City, Xizang - the official launch of the Anduo Tushuo Solar Thermal Power Generation Project in Xizang. As the highest commercial solar thermal power station in the world, this project is contracted by China Power Construction Northwest Institute, with a total investment of 2.037 billion yuan and a planned installed capacity of 100 megawatts. It adopts the internationally leading molten salt tower technology route.

The innovative configuration of the project includes an 800000 square meter mirror field lighting system and an 8-hour binary molten salt heat storage system. After completion, the annual power generation can reach 255 million kilowatt hours, with an equivalent annual utilization hours of 2551 hours. According to calculations, after the project is put into operation, it can replace 60000 tons of standard coal annually, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 165000 tons, equivalent to the carbon sequestration benefits of planting 9 million trees, and significantly improve the power supply structure in northern Tibet.

Representatives from Naqu Municipal Government, Xizang Development Investment Group (Chairman Qi Tengwu), Northwest Academy (Secretary of Discipline Inspection Commission Liu Jun) and other parties attended the ceremony. Liu Jun emphasized that Northwest Institute will integrate its technical standard system and general contracting experience in the field of solar thermal, and through optimizing the weather resistance design of high-altitude equipment and strengthening frozen soil construction, create a "high-altitude version" solar thermal demonstration project, providing a replicable technical template for the subsequent development of clean energy in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.

The implementation of this project has multiple strategic implications:

Ecological value: By replacing traditional fossil fuels, effectively protecting the fragile ecosystem of Qiangtang grassland;

Economic value: It is expected that the construction period will drive more than 500 local employment opportunities, and stable tax sources will be added during the operation period;

Technical value: Breaking through global challenges such as molten salt anti condensation and mirror wind resistance in extremely cold environments of -30 ℃;

Demonstration value: Establishing a Chinese solution for the integrated development of "solar thermal+energy storage" in high-altitude regions around the world.

Experts pointed out that the project will promote the extension of the technological boundary of China's solar thermal industry to extreme environments. Its construction and operation data will provide an important basis for the formulation of standards such as the Code for Design of High Altitude Solar Thermal Power Plants, and play a key supporting role in achieving the goal of 50% clean energy in Xizang by 2030. (This article is from the official website www.seetao.com of Jian Dao.
