On July 13, 2025, with the successful erection of the last section of the conductor in Minfeng County, Hotan Prefecture, the 750 kV power transmission and transformation project around the Tarim Basin, which took 15 years to build, was fully connected. The project is completed by 9 750 kV power transmission and transformation projects in sections, including 9 substations, nearly 10,000 base towers, and a total length of 4,197 kilometers, which is the world's first ultra-high voltage transmission ring network around the desert.
The project is an important infrastructure for Xinjiang to build a national strategic support base for energy resources. After the completion of the project, it will effectively gather tens of millions of kilowatts of new energy power in the Tarim Basin and form a power artery for the transmission of clean energy. Experts from the State Grid Xinjiang Economic Research Institute said that due to the 2-3 hour time difference between Xinjiang and the central and eastern regions, when the photovoltaic power generation in the central and eastern regions is declining rapidly at about 16 o'clock every day, the photovoltaic power generation in the southern Xinjiang region is at its peak, and these clean electricity can be transmitted to the "west-to-east power transmission" channel through the project, effectively guaranteeing the national power supply.
At the same time, this project will provide strong power support for the construction of a modern industrial system in southern Xinjiang. At present, southern Xinjiang is vigorously developing industrial clusters such as new power systems, green mining and processing, advanced manufacturing and new materials, and there is an urgent need for stable and reliable power supply. After the project is put into operation, it is expected to increase Xinjiang's new energy consumption capacity by more than 30%, and reduce the consumption of standard coal by about 5 million tons per year.
At present, 8 of the 9 sectional projects have been put into operation, and the last section of the project is carrying out acceptance and elimination work, and it is expected that the entire project will be officially put into operation in November this year. The completion of this project not only demonstrates our country's technical strength in the field of power grid construction in desert areas, but also provides important support for achieving the goal of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality".(This article is from the official website of Seetao www.seetao.com.
