Photovoltaic installed capacity reaches a historic high
According to the national power industry statistics released by the National Energy Administration on June 23, the cumulative installed capacity of power generation in China reached 3.61 billion kilowatts as of the end of May, a year-on-year increase of 18.8%. Among them, the installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation has achieved a leapfrog growth, with a cumulative grid connected capacity exceeding 1 billion kilowatts, reaching 1.08 billion kilowatts, equivalent to the total installed capacity of about 48 Three Gorges power stations, accounting for 30% of the country's total installed capacity and nearly half of the global photovoltaic installed capacity.
Since the beginning of this year, China's photovoltaic power generation installed capacity has maintained a strong growth trend, with nearly 200 million kilowatts of new grid connected capacity added from January to May, a year-on-year increase of 57%. The relevant person in charge of the National Energy Administration stated that the installation of 1 billion kilowatts of photovoltaic power not only marks a new level of clean energy development in China, but also promotes the improvement of the entire photovoltaic industry chain and the enhancement of global competitiveness. At present, the total number of photovoltaic industry chain enterprises in China exceeds one million, with an annual output value exceeding one trillion yuan. From high-purity crystalline silicon and large-sized silicon wafers to high-efficiency battery modules, intelligent inverters, and energy storage systems, the technology in each link is in an internationally leading position.
Steady progress in power grid investment supports energy transformation
In terms of power grid construction, the investment in national power grid projects from January to May reached 204 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 19.8%. Taking the ± 800 kV high-voltage direct current transmission project from Longdong, Gansu Province to Shandong Province as an example, the annual transmission capacity of the project can meet the electricity needs of more than 10 million households, with clean energy accounting for 50%. State Grid Corporation of China stated that 140 key projects for peak summer season will be put into operation on schedule this year, further enhancing the power supply capacity of the power grid and ensuring stable power supply.
The proportion of thermal power installed capacity continues to decline, and the upgrading of coal-fired power is accelerating
According to data from the National Energy Administration, as of the end of May, China's installed capacity of thermal power was about 1.46 billion kilowatts, accounting for 40% of the country's total installed capacity. To promote the low-carbon transformation of the coal-fired power industry, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration jointly issued the "Implementation Plan for the New Generation Coal Power Upgrade Special Action (2025-2027)", which clearly requires demonstration units to reduce carbon emissions per kilowatt hour by 10% to 20% compared to similar units in 2024 through the application of carbon reduction technologies.
This series of data indicates that China's energy structure adjustment is accelerating, and the proportion of clean energy is continuously increasing, laying a solid foundation for achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals.
