The electric vehicle battery integration project jointly invested by China and Indonesia has officially laid the foundation, which will help Indonesia become the world's first country to achieve full chain production of nickel based batteries.
Simultaneous foundation laying in both regions with a total investment of 6 billion US dollars
The groundbreaking ceremony for the integrated ecosystem project of electric vehicle batteries in Indonesia was held on June 29, 2025, simultaneously in Karawang City, West Java Province and East Hamahira District, North Maluku Province. Indonesian President Prabowo, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong, Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bachriel, Indonesian Minister of State Owned Enterprises Eric, and co-founder of CATL New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. Li Pingping attended the ceremony and jointly pressed the start button.
Annual battery production can support 300000 electric vehicles
The project is jointly invested and constructed by a consortium of two state-owned holding companies in Indonesia, PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam) and PT Industri Baterai Indonesia (IBC), and PT CBL (Puqin Times), a subsidiary of CATL New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. The total investment in the future is about 6 billion US dollars, and the planned annual production of batteries can support the use of 300000 electric vehicles. Indonesia expects that the project will contribute approximately 42 billion US dollars annually to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) after completion, further consolidating Indonesia's position as the center of the electric vehicle battery industry in Southeast Asia.
Build the world's only nickel based full chain production base
PT CBL (Puqin Era) is a holding subsidiary of CATL New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. In recent years, it has actively expanded into mining development, nickel ore smelting, material manufacturing, and battery production in Indonesia.
Prabowo stated in his speech that the foundation of the project will make Indonesia the only country in the world to achieve integrated production of nickel based batteries from upstream to downstream. This investment will significantly enhance Indonesia's production capacity in the field of electric vehicle batteries, making Indonesia the country with the largest electric vehicle battery production capacity in the ASEAN region.
