A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Indonesia for the Indonesian nickel resources and battery industry chain project, which was jointly invested and constructed by a consortium formed by CATL's subsidiary, Indonesia's state-owned mining company ANTAM and Indonesia's battery company IBC. With a total investment of nearly US$6 billion in the future, the project plans to produce batteries annually to support 20-300,000 electric vehicles, and will further expand to the field of energy storage.
Indonesian President Prabowo, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong, Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil, Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Eric, and CATL Co-Founder and Vice Chairman Li Ping attended and witnessed the ceremony.
The total planned land area of the project exceeds 2,000 hectares, including nickel mining and smelting, battery material manufacturing and battery recycling projects in East Halmahera, North Maluku Province, and battery manufacturing projects in Karawang, West Java Province. Among them, the first phase of the Karawang battery plant has a planned production capacity of 6.9GWh, which will rely on cutting-edge technologies such as AI, 5G, and digital twins, and will be built according to the standards of CATL's lighthouse factory to produce high-quality battery products and accelerate the process of electric mobility and energy transition in Indonesia and the world.
Li Ping pointed out that the project integrates key links from minerals to battery materials to battery manufacturing and recycling, and opens up the whole life cycle industrial chain of batteries, "The project will inject strong momentum into Indonesia's green economic transformation to net zero carbon emissions." ”
CATL, as the world's leading new energy innovation and technology company, will also help Indonesia establish the first local renewable energy circular system through Brunp Directional Cycle Technology (DRT Technology). The project uses both advanced technology and renewable energy to achieve ultra-low energy consumption and the recycling of high-value battery materials with a metal recovery rate of more than 95%. After full production, it is expected to produce 142,000 tons of nickel and 30,000 tons of cathode materials annually, and has the capacity to process about 20,000 tons of waste batteries.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Indonesian President Prabowo said: "This is an extremely important and beneficial cooperation, and it is also a large-scale and groundbreaking project. Through this project, we are able to produce the renewable and environmentally friendly energy that the world is looking for. "According to Indonesian forecasts, 8,000 direct jobs and 35,000 indirect jobs will be created when the project is fully operational.(This article is from the official website of Seetao www.seetao.com.
