Globeleq and Rainbow Energy Africa have finalized key agreements with the South African Department of Electricity and Energy and the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) to achieve the commercial closure of the 153 MW/612 MWh Red Sands Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Northern Cape province. The facility covers an area of 5 hectares and will become the largest independent BESS in Africa to achieve this milestone.

Red Sands BESS marks an important step for South Africa in strengthening its power infrastructure. It aims to alleviate transmission and distribution restrictions while improving the reliability of the entire region's power grid. In 2024, the project was selected as the preferred bidder for the South African government led battery energy storage program, supporting the country's efforts to integrate renewable energy solutions.

Jonathan Hoffman, CEO of Globeleq, said: "The commercial closure of Red Beach BESS is a milestone moment for Globeleq and battery storage in Africa. ”. This highlights our ability to provide large-scale clean energy infrastructure to meet the ever-changing electricity demands of the African continent. Building on South Africa's over a decade of renewable energy leadership and our Cuamba solar+energy storage plant in Mozambique, we are integrating battery energy storage into our investment portfolio to support resilient low-carbon power systems across Africa. ”

The Jinsha facility will store surplus electricity during off peak hours and provide power during high demand periods, thereby achieving efficient power flow management within the NTCSA network. It will also provide basic auxiliary services to maintain grid stability and contribute to a stronger energy system.

African Rainbow Energy Company is a renewable energy platform jointly owned by African Rainbow Energy and Electricity Company and Abu Dhabi Bank, and is a key partner in this project. Collaborating with Globeleq, the investment in Red Sands supports our goal of utilizing modern and renewable energy technologies to provide affordable electricity in South Africa and the African continent, while enhancing communities, "said Brian Dames, CEO of Rainbow Energy Africa. This investment also marks substantial progress on the 3 billion rand commitment we made in our South African investment plan

Since 2002, Globeleq has developed a series of power plants with a capacity of 1794 megawatts at 17 locations in seven African countries with support from the UK International Investment Corporation and Norway's Norfund. The company is building 485 megawatts and over 2 gigawatts, continuing to expand its renewable energy footprint.

Red Sands BESS emphasizes South Africa's commitment to modernizing energy infrastructure, utilizing innovative energy storage solutions to meet growing demand while promoting sustainability and grid reliability.
