On June 30, 2025, Kyrgyzstan officially launched the construction of a strategic road from Kanysh-Kiya to Kara-Boura in Jalalabad Oblast. The 16-kilometer mountain road will significantly improve the traffic conditions in the Chatkal region, promote tourism and regional economic development.
High-level leaders attended the groundbreaking ceremony to highlight the strategic significance
The groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place on June 30, Bishkek time, and was led by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Kyrgyzstan with high-level state support. The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet and Chairman of the National Security Council, Kamchibek Tashiyev, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Absatar Sergabayev, and the representative of the President of Jalalabad Region, Tilek Tekebaev, underlined the importance of the project in the country's development strategy.
The construction of difficult mountainous areas is fully supported by the state budget
The road passes through the Chatkal Mountains, where the construction faced complex geological conditions and required mountain blasting, bridge and culvert construction, and large-scale earthworks. The total investment of the project is 1.7 billion Kyrgyz Som (about 19.4 million US dollars), all of which will be borne by the state budget, reflecting the government's firm investment in infrastructure construction and releasing a policy signal to promote the economic development of the western mountainous region.
Promote tourism and promote regional economic integration
The Chatkal region is known for its natural landscapes, but it has long been limited by inaccessibility and the development of tourism has been slow. The road, which is expected to be completed in October 2026, will provide a convenient link from Bishkek to the Chatkal Valley via Jalalabad, driving the development of eco-tourism, homestay economy and related service industries, and helping to diversify the regional economy.
Infrastructure upgrades contribute to the national strategy
The project is a key part of Kyrgyzstan's strategy of "balanced regional development" and "national connectivity". The joint promotion of the Ministry of Transport and the National Security Council reflects the government's overall consideration of economic development and geo-traffic safety. Although it is only 16 kilometers, the road will open up access to the western mountainous region and become a typical example of Central Asian countries using infrastructure investment to boost economic growth.(This article is from the official website of Seetao www.seetao.com.
