In the vast Sahara Desert in Algeria, a major infrastructure project is in full swing. The longest railway viaduct project in Africa, jointly undertaken by China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and Algerian enterprises, is crossing the Oued Douala River with its majestic 4.1-kilometre silhouette, becoming a key transport hub connecting the giant iron ore mine in Garajebilette in Tindouf province with Beshar.

The record-breaking viaduct is an important part of Algeria's 950-kilometre railway line, of which 575 kilometres are under the responsibility of China Railway Construction. The bridge is designed to be between 9 and 12 meters high and is carefully assembled with 1,170 precast concrete elements and 1,432 deck supports. To ensure the quality of the project, the construction team developed a special concrete formula adapted to the desert environment to meet the challenges of extreme climatic conditions.

The construction of the project faces many technical problems: first, the temperature difference between day and night in the desert area is large, and the performance requirements of building materials are extremely high; Second, the seasonal flooding of the Douala River poses a threat to the construction of bridge foundations; Third, it is difficult to control the precision of transportation and installation of prefabricated components. China Railway Construction gives full play to its technical advantages in the field of railway and bridge construction, and adopts BIM technology to carry out digital management of the whole process to ensure the quality and progress of the project.

The construction of the viaduct is strategically important: firstly, it will significantly improve the efficiency of the transportation of iron ore resources in western Algeria, with an estimated annual transport capacity of 20 million tons; Second, as the longest railway viaduct in Africa, it will set a new benchmark for infrastructure; Most importantly, the project will greatly promote the local economy and create a large number of employment opportunities.

At present, the project is progressing smoothly and is expected to be delivered as scheduled in October next year. After the completion of the project, it will not only rewrite the railway transportation pattern of Algeria, but also become a model project for China-Algeria infrastructure cooperation, setting a new benchmark for the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative in Africa. This steel dragon across the Sahara Desert will surely become a new link linking China-Arab friendship and promoting common development.(This article is from the official website of Seetao www.seetao.com.
