On July 1, 2025, Shanghai Electric Group and Bangladesh Electric Power Development Commission officially signed a contract for a major substation construction project, marking the successful expansion of China's power equipment manufacturing enterprises into the South Asian market again. With a total investment of US$120 million, the project is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2026, which will significantly improve the stability and transmission capacity of Bangladesh's power grid.

Project Overview: The 500 kV intelligent substation settled in Dhaka

According to the agreement, Shanghai Electric will be responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a modern 500/230 kV intelligent substation. The project is located in the suburbs of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and is one of the core projects of the Bangladesh government's "Power System Upgrade Plan". After the completion of the project, it will not only meet the growing electricity demand of Dhaka and the surrounding areas, but also provide more reliable power guarantee for the development of local industries.

Technical advantages: smart grid solutions lead the industry

At the signing ceremony, the general manager of Shanghai Electric International Engineering Co., Ltd. said that the project adopts a number of innovative technologies, including intelligent monitoring systems, digital protection devices and high-efficiency and energy-saving transformers. In particular, the project is also equipped with an intelligent inspection robot system, which is the first application in the power industry in Bangladesh. The application of these advanced technologies will greatly improve the operational efficiency and reliability of substations, while reducing operation and maintenance costs.

Strategic significance: Deepen China-Bangladesh energy cooperation

Officials from Bangladesh's Ministry of Electricity stressed the importance of the project for the modernization of the country's power system. Market analysts pointed out that the signing further strengthened the dominance of Chinese companies in Bangladesh's power construction market. According to statistics, the current share of Chinese enterprises in Bangladesh's power engineering market has exceeded 60%, with the deepening of the Belt and Road Initiative, the prospects for cooperation between China and Bangladesh in the field of energy will be broader.

Social benefits: job creation and technology transfer

The implementation of the project will create a large number of jobs, with more than 300 local employees directly employed during the peak construction period. Shanghai Electric said it will carry out systematic technical training to help local employees master advanced power equipment operation and maintenance skills. In addition, Shanghai Electric plans to set up a regional service center in Bangladesh to provide long-term technical support and after-sales service for the local power system, which ensures the sustainable operation of the project.

This cooperation not only reflects the international competitiveness of China's power equipment manufacturing, but also demonstrates the concept of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation upheld by Chinese enterprises in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, and injects new momentum into the upgrading of Bangladesh's power infrastructure.(This article is from the official website of Seetao www.seetao.com.
