On July 5, 2025, China National Energy Corporation announced that the expansion project of the largest thermal power generation project under construction in China, the Beilun Power Plant in Zhejiang Province, has achieved significant breakthroughs. After 168 hours of full load trial operation, Unit 8 with a capacity of one million kilowatts has officially entered commercial operation, with an annual power generation capacity of up to 6 billion kilowatt hours per unit.
Currently, the central and eastern regions of China are experiencing the strongest heatwave this year, with the country's maximum electricity load reaching a historic high of 1.465 billion kilowatts on July 4th. The 8th unit put into operation this time will provide strong support for ensuring power supply. The Beilun Power Plant in Zhejiang Province is located in Beilun District, Ningbo City, and is an important power support point for the East China Power Grid. This expansion project includes the construction of two million kilowatt ultra supercritical units, Unit 8 and Unit 9. The project adopts internationally leading technology, with a coal consumption as low as 257.24 grams per kilowatt hour, setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency of similar units in China.
During the trial operation of Unit 8, all indicators met the design standards. Unit 9 is currently undergoing intensive commissioning and is expected to be put into operation within the year. By then, the total installed capacity of the power plant will reach 7.34 million kilowatts, and the annual power generation will exceed 40 billion kilowatt hours, "said Sun Cheng, head of the Engineering Department of Zhejiang Beilun Power Plant under the National Energy Group
It is reported that during the critical period of peak summer season, Beilun Power Plant fully utilizes the advantages of large capacity units. As of July 5th, the plant has maintained a daily power generation record of nearly 100 million kilowatt hours for 18 consecutive days. After completion, the project will become the largest thermal power generation base in China, providing stable and reliable power supply for the economic and social development of the Yangtze River Delta region.
