On July 7, 2025, Canadian liquefied natural gas company announced that its liquefied natural gas export terminal located in Kittimat, British Columbia, Canada, has officially entered commercial operation, and the first batch of liquefied natural gas cargo has been loaded and shipped. This project is jointly developed by an international consortium consisting of Shell Group, Petronas, China National Petroleum Corporation, Korea Gas Corporation, and Mitsubishi Corporation. It is Canada's first large-scale liquefied natural gas facility with export capacity.
The total investment scale of the project is 210 billion yuan, with two world-class liquefaction production lines and a designed annual production capacity of 14 million tons. As the main operator of the project, Shell (Canada) Energy Limited holds a 40% stake. Cedric Kremers, President of Shell's Integrated Natural Gas Business, said, "The commissioning of this project significantly enhances our global liquefied natural gas supply capacity, and it is expected that liquefied natural gas will play a key bridging role in the global energy transition in the future.
The project is located in a strategic location on the west coast of Canada, effectively connecting the abundant natural gas resources of British Columbia with the strong energy demand in the Asia Pacific region. During the construction period, over 50000 local Canadian workers were employed, and contracts with local suppliers amounted to a total of 210 billion yuan. The project design reserves expansion space and can add two new production lines in the future, increasing the total production capacity to 28 million tons per year.
At present, there are seven liquefied natural gas export projects in different stages of development in Canada, with a potential total investment scale of approximately 109 billion US dollars. According to the plan, these projects will be put into operation gradually between 2027 and 2030, and Canada is expected to become an important supplier of liquefied natural gas in the global market. As a pioneer, the LNG Canada project put into operation this time will provide important reference for subsequent projects based on its operational experience.
