On July 29, 2025, Baotou Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. won the bid for the steel supply project of the the Yarlung Zangbo River downstream hydropower development project, which will provide 62000 tons of high-performance steel for this national major project. The project is located in Linzhi City, Xizang Autonomous Region, with a total investment of about 1.2 trillion yuan. It is the largest infrastructure construction project in China so far.

As a "super project" in the history of China's hydropower construction, the hydropower project in the lower reaches of the the Yarlung Zangbo River is planned to build five cascade power stations. After completion, the annual power generation is expected to reach 300 billion kilowatt hours, equivalent to the power generation scale of three Three Gorges power stations. The project is located in a complex geological zone on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, which places extremely high demands on the strength, low-temperature toughness, corrosion resistance, and seismic performance of construction materials.

This bid is for Baotou Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. to provide material support for key infrastructure construction projects in the Xizang Autonomous Region after participating in major projects such as the Qinghai Tibet Railway, the Lalin Section of the Sichuan Tibet Railway, and the Laluo Water Control Project in Xizang. The company relies on the world's leading rare earth steel research and application technology system, and has specifically developed a series of special steel products suitable for extreme environments such as high altitude, strong earthquake zones, and large temperature differences.

It is reported that the steel products of Baotou Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. have been widely used in key projects such as China's "West East Power Transmission" backbone project, large-scale clean energy bases, and hydrogen transmission pipelines. The company stated that it will fully leverage its advantages in technology research and quality control to ensure timely and high-quality completion of supply tasks, and contribute to the adjustment of the national energy structure and regional economic development.
