China Petroleum Engineering Co., Ltd. recently announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd., has successfully won the bid for the general contracting project of the seawater transportation pipeline in Basra Province, Iraq. The project was awarded by the Basra Oil Company of Iraq, with a contract amount of up to 2.524 billion US dollars (approximately 18.032 billion yuan), becoming another major project that Chinese companies have won in the Iraqi market.
The project is located in Basra Province in southern Iraq, and the main construction content includes the main pipeline from seawater treatment facilities to various connection stations, the branch pipeline from the connection stations to the oil field distribution stations, and related ground ancillary facilities. The total project duration is 54 months, including 42 months for the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, and 12 months for the operation, maintenance, and training phases. After the completion of the project, it will effectively enhance the recovery rate of oil fields in southern Iraq and help promote the development of the local oil and gas industry.
China Petroleum Engineering Corporation stated that if the project is successfully implemented, it will significantly enhance the company's competitiveness in the oil and gas storage and transportation engineering market in Iraq and the Middle East. China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd., with rich experience and technical strength in overseas projects, fully possesses the ability to execute this project. It is expected that this project will have a positive impact on the company's revenue and profits for the next 4-5 years.

It is worth noting that this is the third major project recently obtained by China Petroleum Engineering Corporation in the Iraqi market. In June 2025, its subsidiary China Petroleum Engineering Construction Co., Ltd. just signed a $1.601 billion contract with Total Energy for the Atawi Oilfield Gas Processing Plant project. In addition, China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd. also received a $294 million award from Total Energy this year.
Industry experts point out that this project not only reflects the technological strength of Chinese enterprises in the field of oil and gas engineering, but also demonstrates the deep cooperation between China and Iraq in the construction of energy infrastructure. With the continuous progress of the the Belt and Road construction, the influence of Chinese engineering enterprises in the Middle East market is increasing.
China Petroleum Engineering Co., Ltd. also highlighted in the announcement the potential risks that the project may face, including uncertainty in contract signing, local social environment in Iraq, and other factors. The company stated that it will actively respond to challenges and ensure the smooth implementation of the project. The successful bidding of this project marks another solid step forward for Chinese petroleum engineering enterprises on the path of international development.
