ProRail, a Dutch infrastructure management company, announced on September 2nd that it has awarded an undisclosed contract to the Strukton Arcadis consortium and BAM NexusRail consortium for the implementation of an ETCS (European Train Control System) line side equipment installation pilot project in the northern provinces of Groningen and Friesland. The project adopts a dual line parallel mode: BAM and NexusRail are responsible for the renovation of the 50 kilometer Leeuwarden Stavoren line, while Strukton and Arcadis are responsible for the ETCS deployment of the 25 kilometer Leeuwarden Harlingen Haven line. This aims to accumulate system integration experience through differentiated practices and lay a technical foundation for the subsequent promotion of secondary lines throughout the province.

The project plan is scheduled to start in 2026, with core contents including laying intelligent signal cables, deploying ETCS beacons and axle counters, upgrading to the latest version of ETCS Level 2 system, adapting the track infrastructure and vehicle equipment, and conducting multi-level employee training. The Leeuwarden Harlingen Haven line will be the first to apply technology to validate mature solutions, and its system configuration will directly affect the subsequent line upgrade standards.

As a key node in the modernization process of railway signaling in the Netherlands, this project will gradually phase out the existing ATB-NG Class B system by 2030, ultimately forming an ETCS coverage network centered around Leeuwarden and Groningen, radiating to the surrounding areas. Through phased technological iteration, the Netherlands aims to build a safer and more efficient railway transportation system, providing a practical model for the large-scale application of European railway traffic management systems.Editor/Cheng Liting
