Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company Masdar has signed a binding agreement with Austrian energy giant OMV to jointly build a 140 MW green hydrogen production plant in Austria. This facility located in Br ü cke Anderletta, about 40 kilometers southeast of Vienna, will become the fifth largest green hydrogen production plant in Europe after completion, marking an important step in Europe's clean energy layout.

The project adopts a joint venture model, with OMV holding a 51% majority stake and Masdar holding a 49% stake. During the Abu Dhabi International Oil Exhibition and Conference, the two sides signed the contract in the presence of guests such as Sultan Jabil, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, and Wolfgang Hartmansdorf, Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism of Austria.
According to the plan, the project will complete financial delivery in early 2026, provided that all necessary regulatory approvals and shareholder consent are obtained. Although the formal agreement has not yet been finalized, the construction project started in September this year and is expected to be officially put into operation in 2027. It is worth noting that OMV already operates a 10 MW electrolytic cell in Schwechat, and the new project will continue its technical experience by specifically purchasing renewable energy electricity for hydrogen production.
This cooperation is a deepening extension of the strategic partnership between Masdar and OMV. Previously, both parties had signed a letter of intent to jointly develop green hydrogen, synthetic sustainable aviation fuels, and synthetic chemicals projects in the United Arab Emirates, Central Europe, and Northern Europe. Currently, the construction of green hydrogen energy in Europe is showing an accelerating trend. In 2024, German Siemens Energy and Utility Company EWE also signed an agreement to build a 280 MW green hydrogen electrolysis plant, which is also planned to be put into operation in 2027. The advancement of this 140 MW factory will not only strengthen Austria's strategic position in the European hydrogen energy landscape, but also provide a model for cross-border cooperation in the global energy transition. With the achievement of operational goals by 2027, this project is expected to become an important bridge connecting Middle Eastern capital with the European market, promoting the large-scale application of clean energy technology.Editor/Cheng Liting
