On a construction site in the Tangier Hossema region of northern Morocco, with the completion of the massive concrete foundation for the first gas turbine, a blueprint for the country's future energy security is rapidly becoming a reality. This power plant, named Alwaheda, is not only the long-awaited new heart of electricity in Morocco, but also carries the new chapter written by China's energy engineering construction in North Africa.
The foundation pouring of the first unit has been completed
According to Energy News Africa, the construction of the Alwaheda natural gas power plant has achieved milestone progress. The engineers have successfully completed the concrete foundation pouring of the first turbine unit, marking that the project has fully entered the heavy civil construction phase after months of careful preparation and foundation reinforcement. Project officials stated that this crucial step injected strong power into this highly anticipated power plant. The on-site construction team is making every effort to promote large-scale civil engineering operations such as foundation pouring and bottom plate forming, laying a solid foundation for the installation of core equipment. The engineer emphasized that the transition from fine preparation in the early stage to comprehensive structural construction is a crucial leap, especially considering the huge facility scale of the power plant and the high requirement for installation accuracy of turbine technology.

Technical core: J-class gas turbine
After completion, the Alwaheda power plant will become the largest gas turbine power plant in Morocco and one of the most advanced natural gas power plants on the African continent. Its core power will come from two powerful 495MW units, utilizing efficient H-class technology. Energy planners point out that these advanced devices, once put into operation, will significantly enhance the stability and reliability of Morocco's national power grid. More importantly, gas-fired power generation has the characteristic of rapid start-up and shutdown, which can effectively balance the intermittency of solar and wind power generation, providing key support for Morocco's large-scale development of renewable energy and helping it steadily advance its 2030 energy transformation strategy. China's turnkey project unveiled in North Africa
The Alwaheda project has attracted attention not only for its scale and technology, but also for its unique construction model. This project marks the first time that a Chinese company has undertaken a turnkey project for a gas turbine power station in North Africa. This reflects the increasingly diversified trend of Morocco in the field of international energy cooperation. While actively seeking to ensure reliable power supply, the country is also promoting its long-term energy development strategy through cooperation with different partners around the world. This cooperation example is also a reflection of the continuous improvement of Chinese enterprises' strength in the international high-end energy engineering general contracting market. With the deepening cooperation between China and Morocco in the field of energy infrastructure construction, the successful construction of the Alwaheda power plant will make an important contribution to expanding Morocco's domestic power generation capacity and alleviating the pressure on the power grid.
