About 15 kilometers northwest of Shamuta town in the southern province of Gizan, a vast land is about to usher in an energy revolution. This place has abundant sunshine and is an ideal place for the development of photovoltaic power generation. The joint venture formed by China Energy Engineering Corporation, East China Institute, and Hunan Thermal Power has successfully won the bid for the sixth round of photovoltaic power generation project in Saudi Arabia's Shamuta Power Procurement Company, with a contract amount of 300 million US dollars, marking a new stage of China Saudi Arabia new energy cooperation.
Project Overview: 600 MW Clean Power New Engine
The total installed capacity of this project is 600 megawatts and is an important component of Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The project will be accompanied by the construction of a 132 kV outgoing line system, which will be connected to the Shamuta Photovoltaic Power Generation 380/132 kV Substation constructed and operated by Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) through approximately 150 meters of transmission lines, achieving efficient grid connection with the Saudi main grid.
The joint venture will undertake the full chain work of project design, equipment and material procurement, construction and installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance, fully ensuring the high standard construction and timely production of the project. After completion, the project is expected to generate over 1900 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, significantly enhancing the clean power supply capacity in the southern region of Saudi Arabia and injecting strong green energy into the local economic and social development.

Strategic significance: Supporting Saudi Arabia's energy transformation
As the world's largest oil exporting country, Saudi Arabia has vigorously promoted the transformation of its energy structure in recent years. According to Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030", by 2030, 50% of Saudi Arabia's electricity will come from renewable energy sources, and the installed capacity of renewable energy will reach 58.7 gigawatts. Among them, solar photovoltaic power generation will contribute 40 gigawatts, wind power will contribute 16 gigawatts, and solar thermal power generation will contribute 2.7 gigawatts.
The winning bid of this project is another important breakthrough for Chinese enterprises in the Saudi Arabian new energy market. Since its launch in 2017, Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program has undergone six rounds of bidding, with a total contracted capacity exceeding 43 gigawatts, of which approximately 12 gigawatts have been connected to the grid for operation. Starting from 2025, Saudi Arabia plans to bid for at least 20 gigawatts of new projects annually, providing significant opportunities for global new energy companies.

Win win cooperation: a new chapter in China Saudi Arabia new energy cooperation
China Energy Engineering Corporation's winning bid not only reflects the technological strength and comprehensive competitiveness of Chinese enterprises in the field of new energy, but also further deepens the pragmatic cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia in the field of new energy. In recent years, Chinese companies have frequently won large orders in the Saudi new energy market. From the construction of photovoltaic power stations to the development of energy storage projects, Chinese technology, standards, and solutions are taking root in this hot land of Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia's energy transition has entered a critical moment, shifting from traditional fossil fuels to clean energy. This is not only to free up more crude oil for export, but also a strategic choice to address global climate change and achieve sustainable development. The success of Chinese enterprises in the new energy market in Saudi Arabia is not only the recognition of China's new energy technology and engineering capabilities, but also the vivid practice of China and Saudi Arabia jointly building a green "the Belt and Road".
