On January 21, 2026, HayWind, a wind energy company under Sri Lanka's largest conglomerate Hayleys, officially launched the construction of a 50 MW wind power plant in the northern Mannar region of the country. This project not only sets the record for the largest investment by Sri Lanka's private sector in the wind energy sector, but also sets a new cost benchmark for the country's clean energy development with a historically low bid price of $0.0465 per kilowatt hour, marking a crucial step towards energy independence and green transformation in Sri Lanka.

Create the lowest bid price in history

The winning bid price for this project is 0.0465 US dollars per kilowatt hour (approximately 14.37 Sri Lankan rupees), breaking the country's previous record low of 0.0486 US dollars per kilowatt hour. Compared to other international companies' previous offers (such as 0.08 US dollars per kilowatt hour), it has a price advantage of up to 42%. This highly competitive electricity price makes it one of the lowest wind power projects in Sri Lanka's history, fully demonstrating the enormous potential and efficiency of private capital in promoting renewable energy parity and reducing energy costs for the whole society.

Annual power generation exceeds 200 million kilowatt hours

The total installed capacity of the project is 50 megawatts, and 10 high-efficiency wind turbines with a single capacity of 5 megawatts will be installed. After the project is completed and put into operation, it is expected to produce approximately 207 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually. These electricity will be stably input into the national grid through a long-term power purchase agreement signed with Sri Lanka's national power company, Ceylon Electricity Board, providing reliable and affordable electricity security for local communities and economic development. Assist in energy security and low-carbon transformation

This wind power project has profound national strategic significance. On the one hand, the project can save Sri Lanka up to approximately 4.7 billion rupees in fossil fuel import costs annually, directly enhancing national energy security and reducing dependence on external energy. On the other hand, the project can reduce approximately 186300 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, making a substantial contribution to addressing climate change. The groundbreaking ceremony of the project was attended by the President of Sri Lanka and several senior government officials, demonstrating the country's firm determination to develop local renewable energy and promote the transformation of the green economy. As a national enterprise with nearly 150 years of history, Hayleys Group's significant investment also sets an example for Sri Lanka's private sector to support the country's sustainable development goals.Editor/Gao Xue
