In the latest data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on February 3, 2026, China's shipbuilding industry once again delivered impressive results: in 2025, China's shipbuilding completion volume, new orders received, and held orders ranked first in the world for the 16th consecutive year. What is particularly noteworthy is that while handheld orders reach a new historical high, the intelligent transformation represented by artificial intelligence is quietly taking place deep in shipyards, driving this traditional industry towards a new stage of high quality and efficiency.

Leading in all three major indicators, with full orders

By 2025, China's shipbuilding completion will reach 53.69 million deadweight tons, a year-on-year increase of 11.4%, accounting for 56.1% of the global market share; The newly received orders amount to 107.82 million deadweight tons, accounting for 69% of the global market share; As of the end of December 2025, the volume of orders held has climbed to 274.42 million deadweight tons, a year-on-year increase of 31.5%, with a global share of 66.8%, and the volume of orders held has reached a historical high. The backbone enterprises have strong competitiveness, with 6 companies each ranking in the top 10 of the global shipbuilding completion, order taking, and order holding lists. Among the 18 main ship types, China ranks first in the world in terms of new orders for 16 ship types. The industry has sufficient orders to ensure production tasks for the next 3 to 4 years, laying a solid foundation for high-quality development.

Breakthrough in high-end transformation, delivery of green and intelligent ships

In the past year, China's shipbuilding industry has made significant breakthroughs in the field of high-end transformation. The successful delivery and operation of multiple green and intelligent ships with world-class standards marks the transition of China's shipbuilding industry from leading in scale to leading in technology and quality. The Chinese shipbuilding industry is deeply integrating into the global industrial division of labor system, actively participating in and jointly shaping a new pattern of future shipping and shipbuilding with green and intelligent core features, and continuously improving its international competitiveness and influence. AI deep integration, intelligent shipbuilding improves quality and efficiency

The intelligent transformation has become a key path for China's shipbuilding industry to enhance its core competitiveness. Taking Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. as an example, during the construction of the second domestically produced large cruise ship, the Aida Huacheng, the introduction of AI brain for full process scheduling significantly improved efficiency. In the material warehousing process, AI algorithms optimize scheduling, resulting in a 200% increase in storage space utilization and a 50% increase in inbound and outbound efficiency. In the production planning stage, AI can develop refined daily production schedules for each workstation and dynamically respond to adjustments, increasing the production capacity of a certain workshop by 25%. Artificial intelligence technology is running through various aspects of ship design, procurement, production, logistics, etc., solving traditional problems such as complex processes and complicated materials, and helping China's shipbuilding achieve a leap from producing more to producing more accurately.Editor/Gao Xue
