On the Spring Festival of 2026, the wind in the western Sichuan Plateau was still chilly, but the valleys on both sides of the Yalong River were scorching hot.

When the city is immersed in the laziness of festivals, huge rock drills are roaring in underground factories at an altitude of 3000 meters. In February, the Lianghekou project, the world's largest under construction hybrid pumped storage power station, delivered an astonishing result: the excavation of the underground powerhouse was successfully completed, and the concrete pouring of the downstream reservoir officially began.

At almost the same time, in the mountains of Tiantai, Zhejiang, a 1.7 million kilowatt unit is undergoing final debugging and is about to enter full capacity production in August; Large underground caves are being lit up one by one in Shitai, Anhui and Pingyuan, Hubei.

This is a silent energy hunt.

However, on the back of the frequent engineering successes, a sense of anxiety is spreading in the construction industry: the real estate market is declining, large-scale infrastructure is shifting, and pumped storage is just a short-term dividend that is about to come to an end?

As an engineer who has been working in the power industry for twenty years, I can responsibly tell you that this anxiety stems from a misinterpretation of the long cycle of energy transition.

If we compare the new power system to a precise giant computer, wind power and photovoltaics are not only inputs that depend on the weather but are also prone to fluctuations, while thermal and nuclear power are the basic computing power that responds slowly. Who will make the super cache that responds and smoothly fluctuates at any time?

Only pumped storage energy is available.

It's not advanced hydropower, it's a physical external connection to the power grid

Many people's understanding of pumped storage is still limited to building a hydroelectric power station. absolutely wrong.

It is more like a giant physical power bank installed in the mountains and valleys.

Late at night, when the city falls asleep, wind and solar power generation may be at its peak, resulting in excess electricity. At this time, pumped storage power stations utilize surplus electricity to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, converting electrical energy into potential energy and storing it; During peak electricity consumption during the day, when the gate is opened to release water, the potential energy is instantly converted back into electrical energy.

This seemingly simple physical cycle of drawing and releasing solves the most fatal pain point of the power grid: the intermittency and randomness of new energy.

But its value goes far beyond peak shaving and valley filling.

In extreme cases of power grid collapse, it is the only "black start" power source - it can self wake up without external power and reignite the entire power grid like a spark; Within milliseconds of frequency fluctuations, it is the fastest responding FM guard.

This is not infrastructure, this is the bottom line facility for national energy security. As long as we continue to develop new energy, this stabilizer must exist and be large enough.

500 meter underground intelligent revolution

Let's zoom in and take a look at the underground factory building at Lianghekou.

It is buried about 500 meters deep below the mountain, equivalent to the depth of a 160 story building. The main factory building is nearly 200 meters long, enough to accommodate an 8-car high-speed train.

If you walk in here now, you won't see the traditional scene of dust flying and workers sweating profusely. Instead, it is the first unmanned intelligent rock drilling rig in China's hydropower field. It tirelessly drills holes, and the efficiency of one device is equivalent to that of 10 skilled workers. More importantly, it can avoid fatal risks such as rock bursts.

This sends a signal that pumped storage is bidding farewell to the human wave tactic and entering a technology intensive construction phase.

From the multi-point blooming of Three Gorges Group to the upcoming production of Tiantai in Zhejiang, these super projects are not the final swan song, but the prelude to the climax.

The 700 million kilowatt deep sea has just set sail

We have enough project reserves, are we almost done?

This sound is self defeating in the face of data. Let's take a look at a set of authoritative statistics:

Resource base: The new round of national resource census shows that there are over 500 projects included in the medium and long-term planning, with a total scale of over 700 million kilowatts.

Development progress: By the end of 2025, the installed capacity of the country has only been about 60 million kilowatts, and the scale under construction is about 100 million kilowatts. The current development volume accounts for less than one tenth of the resource potential.

International benchmark: As early as 2006, the proportion of pumped storage installed capacity in Japan exceeded 10%, while in China it is currently only about 1.5%. To achieve a reasonable level, it is necessary to at least double the capacity, which means that approximately 400 million kilowatts of new installed capacity will need to be added in the future.

Policy setting: In February 2026, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Energy Administration issued the latest "Interim Measures for the Development, Construction, and Management of Pumped Storage Power Stations", which clearly states that layout projects must not involve ecological protection red lines. This may seem like a restriction, but in reality, it is a protection of scarce resources - a good position is still ahead.

There is only one conclusion: we are in the first half to midfield phase of the golden decade, far from the end.

Reshaping the value chain in high mountains and deep valleys

For the construction and power equipment industry, which is currently in a period of confusion, opportunities are hidden in high barriers.

Pumped storage is not something that everyone can do. It requires extremely high water head, usually over 300 meters; Strict requirements for distance to height ratio, with an ideal value of less than 4; The geological conditions are even more exceptional.

These stringent conditions precisely constitute the moat of the industry, avoiding low price competition.

The future opportunity lies in the upgrading of the entire industry chain:

Upstream: In the survey and design phase, whoever can accurately identify scarce sites with high water head and geological stability holds the power of discourse;

Midstream: In the construction process, hard rock excavation machines, unmanned intelligent construction, and special high-grade concrete will become essential;

Downstream: In the operation and maintenance process, digital power stations and AI fault prediction will give rise to new service models.

This is not only a feast for civil engineering, but also a fusion field of high-end equipment and digital technology.

Looking back at the 2026 milestone, we will find that the rise of pumped storage energy is essentially a genetic reorganization of China's energy structure.

It fills in the fluctuations of new energy with the differences in mountains and rivers; By investing billions of dollars, we can uphold our commitment to dual carbon.

So, don't ask how many more years you can work.

Take a look at the deeply buried factory building by the Yalong River and the rotating intelligent drill bits. This midfield battle about energy has just begun, and there is still at least ten years left for the participants. Keywords: social commentary, pumped storage, new energy

In this long-distance race, endurance is more important than explosive power, and we have just finished warming up.Editor/Cheng Liting
