On March 3, 2026, Kyrgyzstan plans to build a 200 kilometer border fence along the border between Batken Oblast and Tajikistan. Among them, 65 kilometers are located in Batken District and 135 kilometers are located in Lerek District.
Recently, Abdikarim Alimbayev, Director of the Jilin State Border Defense Bureau, and Abik Shamenov, Governor of Batken Oblast, presided over a meeting of the operational command center in Batken Oblast to discuss border demarcation and anti smuggling issues. The meeting emphasized that by 2025, the country has built nearly 150 kilometers of border fences in the border areas.
It is worth noting that on October 30, 2025, Kamchybek Tashiyev, former Chairman of the National Security Council of Kyrgyzstan, stated at the 91st meeting of the CIS Member States Border Defense Forces Command Council held in Manas City that the Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan border may no longer require long-term stationing of border personnel in the future. He pointed out that the two presidents, Zaparov and Rahmon, are committed to creating conditions for the two peoples to "live in friendship".
As of September 25th last year, the Taji border has completed large-scale construction projects, including the installation of wire mesh, reinforced concrete piles, barbed wire mesh, and 3D fences for over 107 kilometers, and the construction of over 143 kilometers of roads. At present, the Tajikistan side has not yet reported on the progress of installing fences on its own border.
As previously reported, on March 13th last year, Taji signed a border agreement in Bishkek, marking the completion of the demarcation process between the two countries. On March 31st, the presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan held a trilateral summit in Khujand, during which they signed the Treaty on the Border Crossing of the Three Countries and the Khujand Declaration.Editor/Yang Meiling
