On March 6, 2026, China's independently designed and constructed largest cylindrical floating production, storage, and unloading oil plant in Asia officially started construction in Qingdao. The equipment will be applied to Kaipingnan Oilfield in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, marking a new step in the design and construction capacity of China's deep-sea oil and gas equipment.

Multiple indicators ranked first globally

The cylindrical floating production oil storage and unloading device under construction this time has a full load displacement of over 170000 tons, a maximum oil storage capacity of 122000 cubic meters, a process deck outer diameter of 110 meters, and a deck area equivalent to 23 standard basketball courts. The weight of the ship and the outer diameter of the deck rank first among similar equipment in the world, making it undoubtedly the largest offshore oil and gas factory in Asia.

Realize intelligent upgrade

Shu Wei, General Manager of Kaiping Oilfield Engineering Construction at CNOOC, introduced that the new facility adopts a 30-year non return to dock ultra-high standard design, overcomes the design, construction, and installation technology of deepwater ultra large cylindrical floating production equipment, and realizes the first large-scale application of more than 10 domestically produced key equipment, adding 15 intelligent functional modules. After completion, it will become the largest and heaviest cylindrical offshore oil and gas plant in Asia, with the strongest oil and gas processing capacity and the highest level of intelligence.

Assist in deep-sea oil and gas development

This device will be applied to the Kaiping South Oilfield, which is about 300 kilometers away from Shenzhen and has an average water depth of over 500 meters. This oilfield is the largest independently discovered oilfield in China's deepwater field, with proven reserves exceeding 100 million tons. Wang Huoping, Deputy General Manager of the Kaiping Oilfield Development Project of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Shenzhen Company, stated that the project innovatively creates a fully sea efficient development technology system for a cylindrical floating production, storage, and unloading device with a deepwater center and underground well network, and is equipped with submarine pipelines and more than 30 sets of underwater production trees.
